his eyes narrowed. He took a step forward just as a crash of thunder shook the earth. Halloran looked up. The sky poured icy rain into his face. He hesitated another second, then shook the water from his slick, black hair and turned toward the house. Chris and D.J. both sagged in relief. |

Chris stared at Halloran's retreating back. D.J.'s hand tightened on his in the darkness, and he returned the pressure with a squeeze of his own fingers. She gave a soft sigh of comfort. Halloran froze with his hand on the doorknob. He spun around, the beam of his flashlight honing in on them as they huddled in the woods. |

D.J. jumped and gasped in shock. Halloran smiled, a smug, evil smile that tugged another cord of recognition in Chris. But he had no time to analyze the pull. |

"They're here," Halloran shouted to his cronies. He yanked a gun from his shoulder holster as he ran toward them. |

"Run," D.J. hissed and yanked Chris along with her as she did just that. |

The last thing Chris saw before he turned and followed her was Halloran sliding in the icy mud, then falling to his hands and knees. His men came out of the door and promptly fell on top of him. The sound of curses followed them into the night. |
